"50th Anniversary of Tennessee's Civil Rights Sit-Ins"
Fifty years ago, a handful of Tennessee students from Fisk University, Tennessee A & I (which later became Tennessee State University) and American Baptist Theological Seminary, along with religious leaders Kelly Miller Smith and James Lawson, began a sit-in campaign targeting downtown Nashville lunch counters. We Shall Not Be Moved: The 50th Anniversary of the Tennessee's Civil Rights Sit-Ins is the current exhibition at the Tennessee State Museum that commemorates this pivotal chapter in the non-violent movement against segregation which became a model for the rest of Tennessee and the Southeast. It runs through May 16, 2010.
Graham Perry, the Curator of Social History, will be presenting highlights from this exhibition with an introduction by Mary Unobsky, the museum's Director of Marketing & Development.
